了解Jay Z的人都可能相信Hov过去有段毒品交易历史，Hov也经常在歌词中提到。但现在大毒枭Freeway Ricky Ross(和说唱明星Rick Ross争抢名字的) 认为Hov的毒品买卖历史是假的。

Jay最近在Vanity Fair杂志的封面故事采访中谈到，非法的毒品买卖的生意经验对他在如今的体育经纪生意中有帮助。

“I know about budgets. I was a drug dealer, To be in a drug deal, you need to know what you can spend, what you need to re-up. Or if you want to start some sort of barbershop or car wash—those were the businesses back then. Things you can get in easily to get out of [that] life. At some point, you have to have an exit strategy, because your window is very small; you’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die.”

作为上世纪80年代末操纵上千万生意的毒枭Ricky Ross在最新的访谈中，指出Jay的毒品交易过去是假的：

“I’ve been hitting these high schools up letting them know about these dudes that’s out here faking. Talking about they sold dope. And you read that sh*t and it’s so corny, I was just reading on the airplane the other day the Vanity Fair with Jay Z in it, talking about he sold crack. Just reading that story was so corny. These dudes don’t keep it 100. They was good boys and went to school and got college degrees. Somebody gave them a good job and they’re doing alright right now. Everybody wanna be d-boys, but they don’t have real d-boy stories. When you read what they said it looks like a news reporter wrote it for them.”

Ross说自己是在飞机上看到Jay的采访，他说Jay他们有好的过去，上好的大学，每个人都想成为毒贩，但并不是每个人都有真实的贩毒史。
